Sawdust and Diamonds

Artist: Joanna Newsom
Genre: Folk
Decade: 2000 - Present
Title: Sawdust and Diamonds
Author: Bob Fin

My rant about daytime radio and music on TV to the sounds of one of the new artist I’ve found through musicbrick.com.. Joanna Newsom, 10 minutes of moving music!!

No matter where you go in the UK every radio station sounds the same, regurgitating the same dull oldies/newbie’s day after day.

The music scene out there right now is fantastic! and thanks to musicbrick.com people like me/us are being introduced to new and exciting sounds, groups, and artists you will never hear on any daytime music stations.

Recent additions to musicbrick.com… Captain Dangerous, Joanne Newsom, Beruit, Seth Lakeman, Parka are all brilliant!!! Maybe the ‘suits’ that programme the daytime listening should give a look in on musicbrick.com, why not play this stuff?? It’s fresh, new and different.. I don’t think it would scare off too many listeners.

I’ve come to the conclusion that most so called, ‘I like all kinds of music’ type of people, only hear music on adverts or on crap TV programmes like the X factor and American Idol, who let’s face it only do cover versions of middle of the road rubbish anyway and if you don’t sound like last year’s winner then you can bugger off…

How do you think the likes of Joanna Newsom, Natalie Merchant or my favourite non singing mad person Lena Lovitch were to walk in through the door… Cowell, Jackson and Abdul would collectively shit their pants.

I have seen the future it’s called musicbrick.com… brilliant contributors, brilliant stories, brilliant music!!!

People to note and look out for at the mo’ Jackie Thompson, David Gravy and Raymond Gee who sounds like a musical Gee..nius, I look forward to more of their suggestions.

nice one Bob, this Joanna Newsom is just so different, her latest offering which has Sawdust and Diamonds is by far the best thing I've ever heard.

Other really notable ones from her, I would suggest are:

Flying a kite

What we have known

she is the freshest sound out, another good sound is Anais Mitchell particularly a track called Before the eyes of storytelling girls.

If you've never listened to them give Half Man Half Biscuit a try, you really have to listen to the lyrics, they're something else.

I agree with you this musicbrick is what it's all about, I just wonder why it's not busier, let's face it how many times do you hear people say, when they hear a record come on, and it doesn't necessarily have to be an old one, how often they say.....'oh, when this came out I was.........', it often happens.

maybe people are too lazy to do a little bit of work on here.

I've started to tell people at work about the site, and I only became aware of it last week.

Regards

Ray............in Batley.

the Roman Empire, as we all know, it's when Rome ruled whole swaithes of the world, now bear this in mind, Rome is only a city in Italy, nothing too special, just a city in Italy.

I got to thinking about this, I remember when I was young my dad use to go on about the Sheffield Empire, I always thought it was a cinema, perhaps I'm wrong, maybe it's when we ruled the world?

Thank you for taking the time to mention me in your article, I'm chuffed!!!

I agree with what you say, I don't listen to radio anymore it's the same old crap from "popular" bands and all sounding the same. My local radio station got so bad that the same song woke me up 3 times in 1 week - and it wasn't even a new release.

I do have a diverse range of music taste (in fact I've posted a Take That and Kelly Marie brick - but because it means something to me and that is also what this site is all about - stiring the senses and reliving a memory) but I like to hear new stuff too and lots of it.

I lost all sense of hope last week when the Brits were on, I found out that most of the winners were voted for by radio 2 listeners!! Sorry but I don't think Radio 2 listeners are the best qualified to vote for the best in british music - which is why Take That and not Kaiser Chiefs won best live act - I saw both acts on tour so can speak from experience.

And although I love watching X Factor it's more of a comedy show than anything else - look at the winners so far - singers! Can't play, can't write, wouldn't know a decent song if it bit their bum - they're just puppets with a good voice - it's not good british music by any standard!!!!

Well that's my mini-rant over - better go find you some more good new music to listen to......
